Thermal rectification through vacuum.
We propose a mechanism for photon mediated thermal rectification through vacuum relying only on the temperature dependence of electromagnetic resonances. We also propose an example implementation consisting of two polytypes of silicon carbide, which exploits the interaction of temperature dependent surface phonon polaritons to achieve significant rectification.
متن کاملMagnetically induced thermal rectification.
We consider far from equilibrium heat transport in chaotic billiard chains with noninteracting charged particles in the presence of nonuniform transverse magnetic field. If half of the chain is placed in a strong magnetic field, or if the strength of the magnetic field has a large gradient along the chain, heat current is shown to be asymmetric with respect to exchange of the temperatures of th...
متن کاملThermal Rectification Using Bulk Materials
In conduction, thermal rectification occurs when a material or structure transfers heat asymmetrically. In this work, it is shown that, in the bulk, the necessary condition for thermal rectification is that the thermal conductivity of the material or structure be a function of both space and temperature, and that this function is not separable. Practically, this can be achieved using a composit...
متن کاملThermal Effects in Low-Temperature QED
QED is studied at low temperature (T ≪ m, where m is the electron mass) and zero chemical potential. By integrating out the electron field and the nonzero bosonic Matsubara modes, we construct an effective three-dimensional field theory that is valid at distances R ≫ 1/T . As applications, we reproduce the ring-improved free energy and calculate the Debye mass to order e.
متن کاملOn the electron-induced isotope fractionation in low temperature
The formation of six ozone isotopomers and isotopologues, OOO, OOO, OOO, OOO, OOO, and OOO, has been studied in electron-irradiated solid oxygen O2 and O2 (1 : 1) ices at 11 K. Significant isotope effects were found to exist which involved enrichment of O-bearing ozone molecules. The heavy OOO species is formed with a factor of about six higher than the corresponding OOO isotopologue. Likewise,...
